Gatekeeper, East Bank, Cley, 22nd
July 2018.
Common Tern, Snettisham GPs, Norfolk, 21st
July 2018. This first-summer bird stood out amongst the
spectacular 200? or so breeding pairs on the islands.
Purple Hairsteak, Kelling, 21st

Silver-washed Fritillaries, Selbrigg,

Temminck's Stint, the Serpentine, Cley, 20th
July 2018.
Tufted Ducks, Cley,
18th July 2018. Amazingly, 15 days after they hatched,
the female Tufted Duck on Don's Pool still has all eight of her
young.
Clouded Yellows, Cley,
18th July 2018. Two Clouded Yellows at Cley this morning
– either side of East Bank.
Essex Skipper, Cley,
18th July 2018.
Common Blue, Cley,
18th July 2018.
Six-spot Burnet Moths, Cley,
18th July 2018.
East Bank, Cley,
16th July 2018. The East Bank is looking great at the
moment: full of wildflowers, butterflies, moths and other
insects, and a few birds too. I wouldn't mow it until November,
and then do only one side, and not mow the other side until the
next November.
Arnold's Marsh, Cley,
15th July 2018 (above) and May 1981 (below). The famous
Arnold's Marsh at Cley NWT/NT still attracts a few birds, but is
a shadow of its former self – mostly silted up & overgrown today
compared to how it used to be.
White Admiral, Weybourne,
15th July 2018.
Swifts, Cley,
14th July 2018. The 3 Swiftlets in our Box 3 are almost
ready to fledge; here, two of them peep at the outside world. As
always, the full story of our Swifts is on

13th July 2018.
Mediterranean Gulls, Titchwell, Norfolk,
13th July 2018.
The experimental section of new beach fence, Cley,
12th
July 2018. The new experimental section of blue rope fence at
Cley Beach (to replace the dreadful, near-invisible,
high-tension cheese-wire I've been complaining about for years –
see 5th July below) – looks good to me!
Hares, Arnold's Marsh, Cley, 12th
July 2018. Some unseasonable Hare boxing amid the rampant
Samphire on Arnold's Marsh, which badly needs some maintenance.
Water Rail, Cley, 9th
July 2018.
Green Sandpiper, Cley, 9th
July 2018.
Spoonbills, Cley, 9th
July 2018. A juvenile begs food from its parent.
Comma, Sheringham Park, Norfolk, 7th
July 2018.
Roseate Tern, Arnold's Marsh, Cley, 6th
July 2018.
Cley Beach, 6th July 2018. Bits of
jagged plastic junk stuck in the shingle on Cley Nature Reserve
Beach, sanctioned by Norfolk Wildlife Trust in the name of art.
There are more important things, but are you mad? Isn't there
enough plastic junk on our beaches? Very easy to trip over
and cause a major injury too. UPDATE: NOW REMOVED!
Coots, Cley, 6th July 2018.
Otter, Don's Pool, Cley, 5th July 2018.
Kingfisher, Cley, 5th July 2018.
Another victim of Cley's appalling beach fence.

Silver-washed Fritillary, Kelling, 30th
June 2018.
Grayling, Cley,
29th June 2018. Plenty are on the wing now along the back
of the beach by Arnold's Marsh.
Fin Whale, King's Lynn, Norfolk,
28th June 2018. My photograph does it no justice, but the
Fin Whale at King's Lynn was a magnificent sight and enjoyed by
a throng of townsfolk, albeit swimming in circles, clearly
confused having been pushed up the narrow river by the rising
tide and stream of returning fishing boats.
Avocets, Cley,
28th June 2018.
Green Sandpiper, Cley,
26th June 2018.

this morning, a week after the first pair (which are growing
fast). As always, the full story can be followed on Sue's

this evening.

June 2018.
Adult Grey Heron, East Bank, Cley,
22nd June 2018.
Military Orchid, Mildenhall, Suffolk,
21st June 2018. Most of them had gone over, but a few
were still in flower.
American Royal Tern, Church Norton, Pagham
Harbour, Sussex,
20th June 2018. It was clearly vital to get there for
dawn: this was taken in the half-light at 4.30am. Just five
minutes later it flew off.
Pied Crow, Cromer, Norfolk,
19th June 2018. Is it an escape or a ship-assisted
imported wild bird? Either way, it's clearly canny and
street-wise and a great bird to see.
Fox, Great Yarmouth racecourse, Norfolk,
16th June 2018. I spent far too long looking for the Pied
Crow here on 15th & 16th, during which time I missed it three
times, but I did see this early morning fox running away with an
unidentified crow in its mouth!
Swifts, Cley,
18th June 2018. Our first swiftlets of the year have
hatched! As always, the full story can be followed on Sue's
