2. The Glaucous-winged Gull in Gloucestershire
Immature
Glaucous-winged Gull Larus
glaucescens, Gloucestershire, December 2006
(John Sanders). This bird was at Gloucester Landfill site, Hempsted on 15th
and 16th December 2006, but it has not been seen subsequently
(until March 2007!); it
was trapped and ringed (with a
BTO metal ring fitted to the right leg and a blue plastic ring, inscribed
with three letters, fitted to the left leg)
on the latter date.
There is no
public access to view Hempsted tip (there are public footpaths in the area
but they do not overlook the tip), but keep a look
out for this first for Britain anywhere where gulls gather!
A detailed
article is in preparation for Birding World
but, meanwhile, here is a link to a
brief account on the Gloster Birder website.
And now a close-up of
its head when it was trapped for ringing....
3. The Sunderland Siberian Rubythroat
First-winter female
Siberian Rubythroat, Sunderland, Co. Durham, October 2006 (Ian Fisher). The
bird was present from Thursday 26th until Saturday 28th October.
How the Rubythroat frustration could have been avoided
by Brian Unwin
There is always a lottery element whenever a major rarity wings into Britain.
Will it turn up in a location where large numbers of birders can easily reach
and see it – or will its landing be on a remote island, perhaps only accessible
to a comparative few with unlimited funding? If it turns up on a private site
and is not visible from a public place, will the owners welcome birders or deny
access totally?
Bizarrely, now the facts are known, the first-winter female Siberian Rubythroat
that lingered in Sunderland over October 26-28 didn’t quite fit any of these
categories. This may not have seemed to be the case when, the morning after it
was last seen, there was a brief news flash about its presence with an
explanation that it had been in ”a private garden with no access.” However, the
truth of the matter, that took another eight days to fully surface, was not
nearly so simple. What actually happened had so many twists and turns that it
deserves to be in the “you-couldn’t-make-it-up” file.
Several bits of the story emerged during that period, swirling among waves of
rumour within the large birding community of Wearside and South Tyneside. The
breakthrough came, however, at Whitburn Observatory on November 4 when a boring
sea-watch session became suddenly interesting for two of the regulars, ex-miner
Tom “Tucker” Mooney and his retired shipyard worker sidekick Walter Moss. This
was due to the surprise appearance of a one-time Wearmouth Colliery workmate of
Tucker’s, Michael Williams, with a confession: that the rubythroat had spent its
three -day visit to Sunderland in his garden.
It
emerged that for two days Mr Williams and his sons Paul and Adam had agonised
over the identity of the unfamiliar bird regularly feeding on the back lawn of
their home in Edgeworth Crescent off Fulwell Road, Sunderland. When the third
day – October 28 - came and it was still present they decided they needed help
and Mr Williams thought immediately of Tucker, whom he was aware is often at
Boldon Flats, a small wetland reserve on the city’s northern outskirts. So
that’s where he headed – only to be disappointed; there was no sign of Tucker.
This is where the saga veers into tragic-comedy for it turned out that he had
been there - but had left minutes before Mr Williams’ arrival.
So
instead he broke the news of the mystery visitor to the only birders present –
who happened to be probably the sum total of Southend-supporting residents of
Edinburgh. On their way to see their team play away against Leeds United that
afternoon, they had called at Boldon Flats to twitch the American Wigeon there
since the previous weekend. What their eyes were about to focus on, on being
invited back to the Williams household, meant they finished the day in ecstasy,
despite the 2-0 defeat of their beloved Shrimpers.
The
next twist came with their view that someone more experienced needed to be
brought in to confirm the rubythroat identification. Because they were far from
their normal beat, they didn’t know anyone in the County Durham area, which was
why no call was made to any of the dozen or so seasoned birders living within a
few minutes’ drive, several of whom had seen Britain’s only other mainland
rubythroat at Osmington Mills, Dorset, in October 1997 or the one that stayed
for three days on Fair Isle in October, 2003. Instead, as a result of a chance
meeting on Fair Isle earlier in the month, the phone rang for Ian Fisher, the
recorder for neighbouring Northumberland. The only other birder that got to see
the bird was, Mr Williams explained,
someone called Keith who arrived with Ian.
Exactly how
no one else was able to share in their good fortune is not completely clear as
there are two versions of subsequent developments. I heard Ian’s angle on the
circumstances when, after hearing on the local grapevine that he had seen and
photographed the bird I phoned him on November 3 with a view to producing a news
story for national papers, none of which used what I filed. He told me of his
mixed feelings about the rubythroat; he had enjoyed seeing it but felt bad about
not circulating the news because the residents had asked that the location
should be kept secret
They had voiced concerns about a large
number of birders descending on their quiet cul-de-sac, he explained. "I tried
to arrange for others see it, pointing out a considerable sum could be raised
for charity by everyone who came to the house being asked to make a donation,
but they were adamant they couldn’t cope with crowds."
"It placed me in a very difficult
situation. One of the birding basics is that if you see a great bird you spread
the word. I have not even been able to tell my best friends about this yet – and
I dread their reaction when they hear about this. It was just pure chance that I
was invited to give an opinion on the bird - and once I’d seen it was a rubythroat I had to agree to keep the location secret."
After Mr Williams’ dramatic 'confession'
at Whitburn Observatory the following day their identity became known and, as a
result, I went to his home on November 6. He told me that they hadn’t thought
about the possible implications of having such a rarity in his garden until the
four birders arrived. Their fears were only raised when the visitors spoke of
how thousands of people would want to see it. Worried that this might cause
disruption to their neighbours, they asked them to not put out the news.
After the four left they honoured that
agreement. The bird had disappeared (it was not seen after 6pm on the 28th
and the subsequent night was clear, ideal conditions for a departure) by the
time news of the bird’ presence in “a
private garden with no access”
emerged the following morning. However, the scenario would have been different,
I feel sure, if Mr Williams had been successful in his initial effort to find
and tell his old mining workmate Tucker about the bird.
When Tucker and his friend Walter
saw Ian Fisher’s photograph of the rubythroat they admitted that, due to their
comparative inexperience, they would not have been able to identify it
confidently if they had been invited to the house. So they would have had to
call other local birders to the scene and, due to the way things operate in the
area, it would have been impossible to keep the lid on it. Almost certainly the
news would have been circulating nationally by early afternoon and, with the
bird showing for another five hours, a lot of people could have seen it – with
proper access arrangements.
Tucker and Walter believe Mr
Williams would have agreed to access if the approach had been made by local
birders. They – and others – would have happily volunteered to organise things
so that only a small number visited the cul-de-sac at a time. Birders waiting
their turn could have used an open area next to a community centre off nearby
Fulwell Road or maybe even at The Cambridge pub, 200 yards from the cul-de-sac
entrance. The local fish and chip shop would also have welcomed the extra
business. With the bird showing so well, regularly emerging from one of the few
small shrubs on the edge of the narrow back garden to forage for invertebrates
on the lawn, the turnover of visiting small groups could have been quite rapid.
If hundreds of birders had arrived
that Saturday afternoon, it would not have caused problems for the wider
neighbourhood. Up to 1997 the tight network of streets of terraced cottages on
the east side of Fulwell Road were inundated with football fans and their cars
every fortnight when there was a home match at Sunderland’s former Roker Park
ground, the Fulwell End of which was just 300 yards from the cul-de-sac
entrance. Crowds of more than 30,000 were not unusual and on the night of the
historic FA Cup sixth round replay against a Manchester United side that
included Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and 17 year old George Best, in March, 1964,
an estimated 100,000-plus people swarmed into the area.
With such a relatively recent
history of living with really huge crowds, a few hundred birders turning up for
a few hours in this heavily built-up area of Sunderland would hardly have been
noticed.
Brian Unwin, Sunderland, 7th
November 2006.
4. The calls of Sykes's
and Booted Warblers
The calls of Sykes's Warbler and Booted
Warbler, as described in the article of this title by Antero Lindholm and
Tapio Aalto in Birding World
18 (9): 395-396, may be heard by clicking on the three links immediately
below:
Sykes's Warbler 1 Call 1:
the “zak” call of a Sykes’s Warbler, Karaoy, south of Lake Balkhas, Kazakhstan,
8th July 2005. A very short call lasting only one-hundreth of a second. Most of
the energy is at about 4,000Hz.
Booted
Warbler Call 2: the “dsrak” call of a Booted Warbler, Kurgaldzino, near
Astana, Kazakhstan, 3rd July 2005. There is a weak pre-syllable, while the main
syllable is longer than the “zak” of Sykes’s Warber. Most of the energy is
concentrated below 4,000Hz.
Sykes's
Warbler 2 Call 3: the rattle of a Sykes’s Warbler, Kurgaldzino, Kazakhstan,
3rd July 2005. A quite high-pitched and fast rattle.
